Uhlanga Books is a proudly South African, township-based independent publishing company founded by Zimkhitha Zilo in 2020. Based in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, Uhlanga exists to tell stories that matter—stories that reflect the everyday lives, struggles, dreams, and resilience of people in the margins.
At our core, we believe in the power of literature to liberate, educate, and heal. That’s why we focus on amplifying marginalized voices—especially those of women, young people, and township communities who have long been excluded from South Africa’s literary mainstream. Whether written in English or isiXhosa, our books speak truth to power, preserve culture, and reclaim narratives that deserve to be told.
“Until the lions have their own historians, the story of the hunt will always glorify the hunter.” – Chinua Achebe
At Uhlanga Books, we are the lions—documenting and publishing our truths in our own voices.
